What is a GEO Score?

A GEO Score (Generative Engine Optimization Score) is a numerical measure of your content's AI citation readiness — how well it performs against the content signals that AI systems use to select sources for their synthesized answers.

The score is derived from the Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024), which analyzed 10,000+ queries across 30+ domains to identify the specific content modifications that increase AI citation rates. Seven signals were identified, each contributing to overall GEO Score.

A GEO Score of 0-100 indicates how strongly your content signals to AI systems that it is a trustworthy, structured, and directly-answerable source. Higher scores correlate with higher probability of being cited in AI-generated answers.

How GEO Score is calculated

Citations & external references

Weight: 30%+115%

The single highest-impact signal. Linking to authoritative sources dramatically increases AI citation probability.

Statistics & quantified claims

Weight: 20%+22%

Specific data points and verifiable numbers signal factual authority.

Expert quotes & attribution

Weight: 15%+18%

Named expert quotes create directly extractable, citable units.

Heading structure

Weight: 12%+15%

Descriptive H2/H3 headings that match query patterns help AI extract relevant sections.

Early answer density

Weight: 10%+12%

Answering the query in the first paragraph reduces extraction friction.

Readability

Weight: 8%+8%

Clear, accessible writing at appropriate reading level improves extractability.

Freshness signals

Weight: 5%+6%

Visible update dates and current year references for time-sensitive queries.

What does your GEO Score mean?

80–100Excellent

Your content is well-optimized for AI citation. Strong citation signals, statistics, and clear structure. Focus on maintaining freshness and expanding to other topics.

60–79Good

Solid GEO performance with room to improve. Likely missing expert quotes or has weak early-answer structure. Small fixes can push you into Excellent range.

40–59Fair

Moderate AI citation probability. You may be cited for some queries but missing critical signals. The full report will show exactly which factors to prioritize.

0–39Needs Work

Low AI citation probability. Missing most citation signals — likely no external references, no statistics, poor structure. Significant content improvement needed to appear in AI answers.

How to improve your GEO Score

First:Add 2-4 external citations
15 min+20-40 points

Link to authoritative sources: academic papers, .gov data, industry reports. This single change has the highest ROI of any GEO optimization.

Second:Replace vague claims with data
20 min+5-15 points

Find 3-5 places where you say "many" or "most" or "studies show" and replace with a specific number from a cited source.

Third:Move your answer to paragraph 1
10 min+5-10 points

Restructure your introduction to lead with the direct answer, then support it with context and detail.

Fourth:Add one attributed expert quote
30 min+5-10 points

Find a relevant expert statement to include with full attribution: [Name, Title, Organization] + quote.
